First Look: Mr. Herman Rides Shotgun in 'Pee-Wee's Big Holiday'

Paging Mr. Herman.  Mr Herman, you have a first look image at the front desk.

Paul Reubens himself has revealed the very first photo from Pee-Wee's Big Holiday, the long-awaited return of the one and only Pee-Wee Herman.

The sequel, which will debut on Netflix at date that's yet to be determined, kicked off production this week, and Reubens took to to share a peek at Pee-Wee.  "Just finished the second day of filming," said Reubens. "Hitchhiked yesterday all day. Got a ride, hitchhiked some more, then got another ride. A lot of traveling in two days!"

The hitchhiking pays off since Pee-Wee's riding shotgun in the actual picture, which keeps the driver totally out of the frame, firing the imaginations of fans pondering the possibilities.  Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (the feature directorial debut of Tim Burton) found our intrepid hero riding with colorful characters like Mickey and Large Marge.  Who is Pee-Wee rolling with this time?

Pee-Wee's Big Holiday is produced by Judd Apatow, who has shepherded it through development for four years.  Reubens co-wrote the screenplay alongside Paul Rust, a funny, funny man who also contributed to The Pee-Wee Herman Show on Broadway and the Netflix-exclusive fourth season of Arrested Development.

John Lee, who has directed episodes of Inside Amy Schumer, Broad City, and Wonder Showzen, is helming Pee-Wee's Big Holiday, his first feature.

Looks like Pee-Wee took his own advice and took a picture (it'll last longer).

The story of this streaming sequel hinges upon "a fateful meeting with a mysterious stranger inspires Pee-wee Herman to take his first-ever holiday in this epic story of friendship and destiny."

“Judd and I dreamt up this movie four years ago. The world was much different back then— Netflix was waiting by the mailbox for red envelopes to arrive. I’ve changed all that. The future is here. Get used to it. Bowtie is the new black,” Pee-Wee declared when Netflix officially announced Pee-Wee's Big Holiday last month.

After the success of Pee-Wee's Big Adventure in 1985, the 1988 whiff of a sequel Big Top Pee-Wee and unrelated salaciousness effectively killed the potential for a glorious Pee-wee-centered series, but after the character's recent mini-resurgence and Apatow's decade of crazy-success, Pee-Wee's Big Holiday is actually happening.

Stay tuned for more from the sequel as production continues.
