Flame On(ish)! First 'Fant4stic' Poster Assembles Marvel's First Family

20th century Fox has unveiled the first real poster for this summer's Fantastic Four aka Fant4stic.

Like all the other promotion for this reboot (not that there's been much so far), the one sheet is all about distancing Fant4stic from the two previous cinematic outings of Marvel's First Family.  With its dark skies, forbidding landscape, and general ominousness, this poster promises that Josh Trank's take on the source material is very, very different from the slapdash, silly Tim Story movies, both of which made money but but didn't exactly win any fans.

It only shows Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, and Jamie Bell (playing The Thing via motion-capture) from the back, but it gooses them with a sprinkle of superpowers thanks to Johnny Storm lighting up his fists with flames and Sue Storm turning invisible.  Ben Grimm's powers sort of speak for themselves, while Reed Richard is left out in the cold.  He's just standing there, not even stretching, probably for fear that an elongated Teller would look goofy, thus defeating the whole point of this Fant4stic poster.

It also boasts the tagline "Change is coming."  It's generic, but it also sounds appropriate, since Fant4stic is all about the difficulty of going from (relatively) ordinary to super, and the sometimes horrific challenges that come with it.

"I’m a huge David Cronenberg fan, and I always viewed Fantastic Four and the kind of weirdness that happens to these characters and how they’re transformed to really fall in line more with a Cronenberg-ian science fiction tale of something horrible happening to your body and [it] transforming out of control," Trank said back in January.

The grim and gritty approach apparently isn't all-encompassing.  Last week, Teller himself revealed that the classic blue Fantastic Four costumes do appear in the film, even though all we've so far are the black outfits featured on the poster.

"These are the beta versions of the costumes, which is great," Teller explained. "But, yeah it would be very odd if the Fantastic Four didn't don the traditional costumes. You've got to. There is some servicing there. You've got to give that to the fans. That's what it's all about."

So we haven't yet seen all that Fant4stic has to offer costume-wise.  Nor have we gotten a good, official look at Doctor Doom, the villain played by Toby Kebbell, the British actor known for playing Koba in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and going crazy with jealousy on Black Mirror.

We'll see the Fantastic Four's longtime nemesis sometime between now and the theatrical release on August 7th, though.  So stay tuned.
