Bradley Cooper to Make Directorial Debut with 'A Star Is Born' Remake; Will Beyonce Return?

Not content as a mere two-time Academy Award nominated, talented, handsome, and charismatic actor, Bradley Cooper is finally fulfilling his longtime ambition to direct.

And he's chosen a humdinger for his feature directorial debut: Cooper is in talks with Warner Bros. to direct and possibly star in another remake of A Star Is Born.

The studio has been keen on a modern A Star is Born for the last four years.  In 2011, Warner Bros. enlisted Clint Eastwood to direct, with with Beyonce set to star as a young vocalist on the rise who is also engaged in a dramatic love affair with a failing older musician.  That iteration never gained the necessary momentum, however, and when Queen Bey became pregnant, Eastwood moved along to Jersey Boys and, eventually, American Sniper.

Now that American Sniper is the biggest U.S. release of last year, having grossed $344 million at home towards a $528 million worldwide total, the studio is eager to stay in the Bradley Cooper game.  He was instrumental in getting the film (a passion project of his) made, and he was a key creative figure too. So now he's seizing the opportunity to direct, which he's been talking about since even before Limitless

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cooper's in negotiations to direct, produce, and maybe even play the aging alcoholic musical mentor.  Since she's only become more unstoppable in the last four years, it's only natural to assume Warner Bros. is hoping Beyonce can finally fit A Star Is Born into her schedule.

The film will be produced by Billy Gerber and Jon Peters, who also produced the 1976 version starring Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.  That was the third version of the tale first told in 1937 original, which starred Janet Gaynor and Frederic March.  That was followed by the first remake, the one with Judy Garland and James Mason, in 1954.

Now Cooper, who next stars in Cameron Crowe's Aloha, is poised to make it an even four iterations of the musical.  It might be some time before he can actually make A Star Is Born, because he's keeping very busy.  He's reuniting with Silver Linings Playbook/American Hustle cohorts Jennifer Lawrence and David O. Russell on Joy, the true story of the single mother who invented the Miracle Mop.  He'll also dust off his Wet Hot American Summer character Ben for the Netflix series.

Oh, and he's also developing Honeymoon with Harry as a directorial project and producing Arms & the Dudes, a true story directed by The Hangover helmer Todd Phillips and starring Miles Teller and Jonah Hill.

But if he and the studio can snag Beyonce, expect A Star Is Born to come together quickly.
