First Look: Holy Chimichanga, It's Really Ryan Reynolds as 'Deadpool'!

Deadpool is actually really filming in Vancouver right now at this very moment.  After a decade of Herculean effort and one major cinematic whiff, Marvel's Merc with a Mouth is coming to theaters next year.

Ryan Reynolds has debuted the first look of himself in the full-blown Deadpool costume, and it's gobsmackingly faithful to the comics, right down to the impossible white eyes and little belt buckle logo.  What's more, he's lounging sexily on a bear skin rug with a roaring fire in the background, riffing on a legendary Burt Reynolds Playgirl photo.  So clearly, Wade Wilson's ridiculous, referential, gonzo sense of humor is making the leap from the page to the screen this time.

Reynolds' first turn as Deadpool in the 2009 shamblefest X-Men Origins: Wolverine so bastardized the character that it sewed his mouth shut and gave him every mutant power you could think of.

Deadpool, the feature directorial debut of visual effects veteran Tim Miller, promises to be different.  "I’m incredibly happy about it - we’ve got a director that understands that world, and writers with a slavish devotion to the canon of that character," Reynolds said just last week. "That’s the most important aspect: it’s made in a way the most critical of fanboys could embrace. Well, that’s the hope."

Based on this first look picture, Reynolds wasn't kidding.  This is totally Deadpool, to the extent that we're actually a little stumped by the eyes.  In all likelihood, the winking look isn't built into the sculpt of the mask.  It's a safe bet that Miller is realizing those expressive eyes via CGI, slapping Reynolds' brow movements on the mask in post-production.

Reynolds tweeted the image this morning along with the cheeky caption, "With great power, comes great irresponsibility. #deadpool #officialsuit @deadpoolmovie" and followed it up with a characteristically smartassed, "No bears were harmed in the making of this photo. Though many bears likely turned on."

He's joined in this unlikely comic book movie by Morena Baccarrin as Vanessa Geraldine Carlysle, aka Copycat, TJ Miller as Wade's sidekick/hardware guru Weasel, Ed Skrein (presumably playing the as-yet unidentified villain) and Gina Carano as obscure mutant Angel Dust.  There will also be roles for familiar mutants like Colossus, who won't be played by X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, and X-Men: Days of Future Past actor Daniel Cudmore.

Since Deadpool is definitely part of Fox's quickly expanding X-Men Universe, it's not too much to expect some cameos and/or shouts out to next year's X-Men: Apocalypse and Gambit, which stars Channing Tatum as the Ragin' Cajun.

"So yeah, I guess I would say it's part of an overall timeline and thought process that goes into these films, some of which is inspired by the comics and some which is inspired by seeing what Marvel’s done with [making] a larger tapestry and linking all those movies together, even as they stand independently as well," explained producer Simon Kinberg not too long ago. "The same kind of thought is going to go into these X-Men movies at Fox.”

The Merc with a Mouth finally gets his due in theaters February 12, 2016.
