While Machine Gun Preacher may sound like a B-movie straight out of Roger Corman's vault, it's actually aiming to be an action-drama about a biker-turned-Mother Teresa helping children in Uganda and Sudan. Weirder still, it's based on a true story!
Based on Sam Childers' strange journey, Machine Gun Preacher will be coming at you from Lionsgate and director Marc Forster, from a screenplay by Jason Keller (Immortals). Gerard Butler, who has guns of his own, will be portraying Childers, the once-violent gang member who embarks on a spiritual path and becomes a warrior for the desperate and helpless.
Machine Gun Preacher is also set to star Michelle Monaghan (as Childers' wife), Madeline Carroll (as his daughter), Kathy Baker (his mother) and Souleymeane Sy Savane (as his right-hand man in Africa). Production is expected to begin July 5 in Detroit, with location shooting in South Africa to follow. A fall 2011 release is planned.
