Johnny Depp apparently has an obsessive relationship with the late writer, Hunter S. Thompson. He portrayed him (or rather his alter ego, Raoul Duke) in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and is even said to have lived in Thompson`s basement for a period of time… typical crazy Depp…
Now he is playing the lead in The Rum Diary, the movie based on Thompson`s book of the same name, which was based on Thompson`s own experiences in Puerto Rico. So essentially, Depp is once again playing Hunter S. Thompson. In these newly released production stills, Depp looks much more suave and much less drug-addled. But as it`s a Thompson story, I`m sure drugs and self-destructive tendencies will be rampant throughout the film.
