First Image of Andrew Garfield as 'Spider-Man'

After weeks of spy photos giving nothing but furtive peeks at Andrew Garfield or Emma Stone in character as Peter Parker or Gwen Stacy, Sony has just dropped an image-bomb of epic proportions, showing us not only the first official still of Garfield in character, but wearing director Marc Webb’s all new version of the iconic red-and-blue Spider-Man costume.

It’s still pretty true to the classic Spidey look, but it departs from the Sam Raimi version enough that you’re not going to confuse the two.  In fact, it looks like a conscious attempt to stick to the recognizable costume while abandoning the elements associated with Raimi’s outfit, such as the raised webbing and silky, layered fabric.

I like the runny ink of the spider-symbol and his chest, and the fact that he’s carrying a backpack, both of which give that feel for Spider-Man’s normal guy essence.  Also, the lack of a fake musculature under the suit is a relief, as Garfield’s lean physicality is a better match for the character.

What do you fine folks think?  Is it different enough or too different?  Stylized to just the right degree or not stylized enough?  Does it need fake muscles to be properly superheroic?
