The King’s Speech, a film which cost $15 million to make, has also made an impact at the box office earning $57.3 million domestically to date. The nominations it received include best picture, best director and acting nods for Colin Firth for best actor, and Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter in the supporting categories. However, my guess is that on February 27th, when the awards are given, it will be Firth accepting his best actor trophy with the supporting nods going another direction.
The biggest surprise this year is Christopher Nolan not getting a best director nomination for Inception. While the film garnered a spot with the ten best picture nominees, the acclaimed director was left behind. The film’s editor, Lee Smith, was also overlooked. This is especially surprising since the dream within a dream feature was a huge visual achievement.
However, Inception wasn’t the only film to fail to receive what is most certainly worthy attention. Andrew Garfield seemed destined to pick up a best supporting actor for The Social Network. His outstanding performance as Eduardo Saverin helped make The Social Network the incredible motion picture it was. Thankfully there is a very good chance at taking home the best picture of the year for the feature.
With all the disappointments, there were certainly a few pleasant surprises. While The Fighter kept taking out its competition for the superb performances of Christian Bale and Melissa Leo in supporting roles, it was nice to see the addition of Amy Adams with her best supporting actress nomination. She, along with the rest of this fantastic cast, are part of the reason The Fighter is such a compelling and powerful drama. The film received 6 nominations including best picture and best director for David O. Russell.
Javier Bardem also found himself with something to celebrate today. It seems Julia Roberts helped convince enough people to check out his phenomenal work in Biutiful. The acclaimed actor was nominated for best actor for his performance in this dark and intense drama.
