Blake Lively to Shoe Shop in ‘Sex and the City’ Prequel?

So you’ve run your popular cable television show-turned movie franchise into the ground with a bloated, disappointing sequel?  What are you going to do now?  Reboot it, of course.  The big rumor this morning is that plans may very well be afoot to adapt Candace Bushnell’s Sex and the City prequel novel “The Carrie Diaries” as a feature film.  Since it’s just not a good rumor without a name to put in the headline, the word is that series mastermind, writer/director Michael Patrick King is interested in having Gossip Girl star Blake Lively take over the lead role.

The story apparently started out in Italian magazine Grazia.  Their source claims that Sarah Jessica Parker and the rest of the past leads would have no involvement, saying, “There are no plans to bring SJP and the other girls back together in the old format.”

If the possible film stayed true to the elaborate mythology of the series and the prequel novel, then supporting ladies Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha would not appear, as the story focuses exclusively on the young Carrie Bradshaw. “The prequel is about breathing new life into the story and exploring Carrie’s first few months in NYC and the beginning of her relationship with an older man,” says Grazia’s anonymous source.

Michael Patrick King has evidently expressed an interest in adapting “The Carrie Diaries” in the past.  If a new film were to be successful, there’s more franchise material on the way, as author Bushnell has just finished work on another prequel “Summer and the City”.

If this actually happens, it will be an instance of reboot-fever moving well beyond superhero franchises.

So, do you think Blake Lively could replace Sarah Jessica Parker, or should this series be allowed to expire semi-gracefully?
