As established with The Dark Knight, 30 facebook credits grants a 48 hour rental. 30 facebook credits is equivalent to $3 in actual money, but during the rental period you can view each film as many times as you please, without losing an ounce of social networking functionality. That's right, you can still post comments and update you status while enjoying the antics of Yogi and Boo Boo.
"We're pleased to expand our test with a variety of titles that will appeal to a broad audience," Warner Bros president of Digital Distribution Thomas Gewecke told The Hollywood Reporter via a press release. "These titles have substantial followings on Facebook. The fan pages for 'Harry Potter' and 'Inception' alone are two of the most popular and active communities on the site."
With the addition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the studio is offering a selection of its two biggest franchises. While adding Inception to Nolan's The Dark Knight is something of a no brainer, Yogi Bear and Life As We Know It represent wholly different demographics on which to test out facebook rentals. Yogi Bear is targeted at substantially younger audiences, while Life As We Know It, starring Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel, can capture the romantic comedy crowd who had their fill of Inception on first viewing.
Do you think this rental platform will catch on, with other studios joining the facebook party?
