Disney Lets Go of Joseph Kosinski's 'Horizons'

In what amounts to an amicable break up, Disney is abandoning its development of Horizons, formerly titled Oblivion, but is allowing director Joseph Kosinski to shop the project to other studios.  According to The Hollywood Reporter, there are multiple parties interested in the second film from the director of Tron: Legacy, including 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros, and Mandate.

Kosinski himself co-wrote the comic book 'Oblivion', and Disney acquired the rights after a heated bidding war with Paramount and Universal last summer.  Tom Cruise has expressed a strong interest in starring in Horizons, and attended the premiere of Tron: Legacy pursing the lead role.  Apparently, the film was in the design stage, but the budget could not be kept under $150 million, and Disney was not keen on a PG-13 science fiction actioner at such a high budget.

The commercial performance of the much-hyped Tron sequel presumably cooled the studio's heels on big budget science fiction endeavors for a while, but Kosinski retains a strong relationship with Disney.  Another Tron sequel could still happen with him on board, and he is also developing a remake of The Black Hole at the house of the mouse.

Horizons boasts a screenplay by Karl Gadjusek and William Monahan, who won an Oscar for The Departed.  The story concerns a solider in a post-apocalyptic future, patrolling Earth's scorched surface while the rest of humanity lives in the clouds.  While out repairing weaponry that hunts vicious aliens dwelling on Earth, he unexpectedly encounters a beautiful woman who changes his existence in profound, action packed ways.
