Joseph Kosinski Looking to Direct 'Archangel'

Officially, Joseph Kosinski holds the distinction of being the helmer behind the high-grossing feature directorial debut ever, though his first film, Tron: Legacy, was almost certainly the most expensive film from a first-time director.  Though Disney was looking to rebuild Tron as a modern franchise, that digital ship may have set sail on a CGI ocean, and Kosinski's second feature will most likely be Horizons, a big budget science fiction adventure to star Tom Cruise.  But he's also circling another sci-fi actioner, Archangel, as a probable follow up to Horizons.

Deadline reports that New Regency has brought in screenwriter Adam Cozad to rewrite the Archangel script, which originated with Andrew Will.  The story concerns a group of special ops soldiers who track and, when necessary, exterminate aliens living amongst otherwise defenseless Earthlings.  Scott Free, the production company of sibling directors Ridley Scott and Tony Scott, is producing with New Regency, and they're apparently "attaching" Kosinski to direct.

As for Horizons, Universal Studios is still in the process of acquiring that project, after Disney opted to let Joseph Kosinski shop it to other potential studios.  Disney picked up the film in a bidding war well before the release of Tron: Legacy, but decided during the design phase that a hugely expensive PG-13 action film doesn't fit its current agenda.  Tom Cruise has been keen to star in the project since it first appeared as comic book co-authored by Kosinski himself, and Universal is reportedly hoping for an October production start.
