Game Change is based on the bestselling nonfiction account of the 2008 Presidential Election, 'Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime' by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin. The book is divided more or less equally between the Democratic and Republican campaigns, including plenty of time with Hillary and Bill Clinton during the primaries, but it seems that the adaptation will focus exclusively on Arizona Senator John McCain's campaign.
Fellow four-time Oscar nominated Ed Harris is playing McCain, with Woody Harrelson as his senior campaign strategist and adviser Steve Schmidt. Also playing a senior adviser to McCain is Ron Livingston, who will portray Mark Wallace. Melissa Farman is also on board as Bristol Palin.
The film, which does not yet have an official premiere date, is directed by Jay Roach, who helmed Meet the Parents and Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, as well as its sequels. A fact-based political story might at first seem out of his wheelhouse, but Roach previously directed the HBO movie Recount, which chronicled the disputed Florida recount efforts in the 2000 election. For Game Change, he is once again teaming up with his Recount writer Danny Strong.
