Michael Sheen is Definitely Not in Tim Burton's 'Dark Shadows'

For Dark Shadows, his feature revival of the gothic 1960's soap opera, Tim Burton has culled quite an ensemble cast to portray the Collins family and their associates, with his usual leading man Johnny Depp as the mysterious vampire Barnabas.  Joining Depp are Jackie Earle Haley, Helena Bonham Carter, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Thomas McDonnell.  Conspicuously absent from that list, you'll notice, is Michael Sheen, who says unequivocally that he will not appear in Dark Shadows, despite recent reports linking him to the role of Robert Collins.

When Kick-Ass and Let Me In actress Chloe Grace Moretz kicked off a one-day Speculate-O-Tron extravaganza and was subsequently confirmed to play Carolyn Collins, Sheen was reportedly reading the screenplay, with filmmakers hoping he would play Robert, the uncle to Moretz's Carolyn and brother to reclusive Collins matriarch Elizabeth, who will be portrayed by Pfeiffer.

"I'm not in Dark Shadows," Sheen replied when asked about his involvement in Burton's next project during a roundtable discussion of an upcoming project, in which Sheen has a small but very funny role.  His participation in the spooky ensemble will just like yours and mine.  "I get to watch it," he says, "which is wonderful."

A simple, indisputable statement that updates succinctly and in no uncertain terms.  Don't trust the film's IMdB page, Sheen's not on board.  Too bad for Dark Shadows, as Sheen is an asset to any film lucky enough to have him.  He's played former British Prime Minister Tony Blair three times, in The Deal, The Special Relationship, and The Queen.  He's also had memorable roles in The Damned United, Alice in Wonderland, Tron: Legacy, Blood Diamond, Twilight: New Moon, and the Underworld, as well as a brief recurring role on 30 Rock.

Dark Shadows, meanwhile, is set to commence production soon for an as-yet unspecified release in 2012.  Tim Burton is directing from a screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith, the novelist who is also responsible for adapting the currently-filming Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter based on his own book.
