This first Tintin is directed by Spielberg and produced by Peter Jackson, while the sequel, Prisoners of the Sun, is directed by Jackson and produced by Spielberg. The duo has said that they opted to use motion capture in order to capture the exact look of Herge's iconic comic books while maintaining the sort of detail that live action affords. It's certainly distinctive and impressively detailed, but the big question remains whether the characters will fall into the dreaded Uncanny Valley, where demons dwell – too animated to be taken seriously, too real to be anything but creepy.
Speaking of characters, joining Bell in mo-capped performances are Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig, Toby Jones, Cary Elwes, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost. The screenwriters on this fist Tintin are Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright, and Joe Cornish, a geek-friendly British triumvirate if ever there was one.
In the coming months, Paramount is going to have to put a lot of elbow grease into familiarizing American audiences with the character, who has been a big deal everywhere else for more than half a century. They've got a little while, as The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn is set for a stateside release on December 23rd.
