First Image of Henry Cavill as Superman in 'Man of Steel'

Yesterday, Henry Cavill described putting on the Superman costume for the first time.  Today, you can describe seeing him in the Superman costume for the first time, as Warner Bros has released the first official image from Zack Snyder's rebootized Superman, Man of Steel.  The costume itself looks quite traditional, and notably features a less sharply angled S emblem, a scaled texture, and a cape that's quite a bit longer than we're accustomed to.

Cavill's hair lacks the Superman's signature curl over the forehead, but let's look at the image itself, which seems designed to say, "This film will be nothing like Superman Returns."  The setting and presence of sparks indicates that the Big Blue Boy Scout will break some stuff in most explosive fashion.  His pose, meanwhile, is not in the regal, chest-puffing Superman style, but is instead more of a battle pose, which similarly implies that he's going to be involved in fisticuffs.

But I digress.  Behold, your new Superman!

The lighting and pose combine to make the status of Superman's underwear mysterious.  Traditionally, the Kryptonian wears his red-tighties on the outside of his pants.  Given that this costume sticks to the basics, it seems likely that Cavill will wear the undies, but perhaps all the darkness in that region is hiding a lack of redness.

An accompanying press release officially confirms that Antje Traue is part of the cast as Faora, the villainous sidekick of Michael Shannon's General Zod.  It also identifies Christopher Meloni's military character as Colonel Hardy, who will presumably share some scenes with Harry Lennix's General Swanwick.  Rounding out the supporting cast, as you know, are Russell Crowe, Julia Ormond, Diane Lane, and Kevin Costner, as Superman's biological and adopted parents, respectively.  Hopefully sometime soon we'll see an image of Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

Man of Steel will produce sparks and wreckage in theaters on June 14, 2013.
