NPH Lives! First Image from 'A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas'

The last time we saw the prostitute-loving, car-thieving, balls-tripping alternate universe version of Neil Patrick Harris in the sequel Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, he was meeting a most unfortunate but inevitable fate.  Rest assured, however, it wouldn't be an installment of the improbable franchise without the man known affectionately as NPH, and he will once again run into John Cho and Kal Penn as the title characters in A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas.  In order to give a weary, fearful populace a beacon of light towards which to strive, NPH is included in the first image from the upcoming sequel, flanked by Cho and Penn in Nutcracker garb.

This official image made its official debut at Yahoo! Movies. Officially.

The three-film journey of stoner buddies Harold & Kumar began back in 2004, with a seemingly casual quest to sate their desire for White Castle burgers, and at this point, the fact that Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle spawned a franchise is sort of a part of the joke.  The holiday-themed second sequel will apparently contain what purports to be the first-ever shot of marijuana smoke in 3D.

That's right, A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas will be in 3D.  I applaud the use of an extra dimension as a happy novelty, which so far is the best use of the format.  Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, who wrote both previous movies and directed the first sequel are once again responsible for the screenplay.  Todd Strauss-Schulson directs this time out, as Hurwitz and Schlossberg are busy directing another franchise sequel featuring John Cho: American Reunion.

Paula Garces and Daneel Harris return as their respective love interests, and as always, Harold and Kumar will meet a variety of odd characters on their journey.  Actors personifying these strange individuals in the new film include Patton Oswalt, Elias Koteas, Thomas Lennon, and Danny Trejo, as well as Eddie Kaye Thomas and David Krumholtz as Rosenberg and Goldstein.

A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas hits in 3D on November 4th.
