Coming off the career critical high of The Social Network, there was initially some criticism of Fincher for covering what could be considered somewhat familiar territory. The director of Seven, Zodiac, and Fight Club explained that Sony's edict to create a dark, grown-up franchise was simply too compelling. The film's first trailer, with its strikingly barren imagery set to a cover of 'Immigrant Song" by Karen O and Trent Reznor subsequently silenced many a naysayer.
The screenplay is adapted by Oscar winner Steve Zaillian, who recently contributed to the Moneyball script with Aaron Sorkin. Bringing it full circle, Sorkin won his first Oscar for The Social Network, from which Fincher brought much of his crew for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, including co-composers Reznor and Atticus Ross, cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth, and editors Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is scheduled for December 21st.
