Moody First Sample of Trent Reznor's 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' Score

Yesterday, Sony Pictures released a heaping of character profiles and accompanying images from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the studio's American adaptation of the novel that made Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson a posthumous bestselling author.  If you clicked all the way to the film's official website to investigate all 18 bios without hitting the mute button, then you were treated to the first sampling of the film's score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.  The evocative, somewhat sinister seven-minute track is now helpfully available for a listen free from the encumbrances of an official site.

The man behind Nine Inch Nails made his debut as a composer in collaboration with Ross on last year's The Social Network and the result won both men their very first Academy Award.  While it was Reznor's first feature film score, it was only Ross' second, as he previously composed for The Book of Eli, along with one segment of the anthology film New York, I Love You.

Naturally, The Social Network director David Fincher brought Reznor and Ross along for his Swedish thriller, which will be the first in a trilogy adapting the other two novels in Larsson's series, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.  All three texts were previously made into films in Larsson's native Sweden (all of which earned limited releases Stateside), with Noomi Rapace as the title character.

In Fincher's version, Lisbeth Salander is played by Rooney Mara, who appeared briefly but crucially in The Social Network as Zuckerberg-spurner Erica Albright.  Daneil Craig plays the nominal lead, journalist Mikael Blomkvist, and ringers like Christopher Plummer, Robin Wright, and  Stellan Skarsgard round out the cast

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo brings the holiday cheer to theaters on December 21st.  Until then, give the terrific teaser trailer another watch and enjoy the cover of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" by Reznor and Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs:
