Noomi Rapace won many a fan as Lisbeth Salander in the Swedish film trilogy based on Larsson's novels, and not just abroad. The films received limited releases here in America and are currently available via Netflix's streaming service, and fans of the novel here seem almost unanimously to groove to her performance. Rapace is now starring in big Hollywood films like Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Prometheus.
Fincher's take on Salander is, wisely, very different in appearance from Rapace's version, while still being immediately identifiable as the character. Mara played a brief but important role in Fincher's last film, The Social Network, as Erica Albright. Here she looks almost unrecognizable, and I'm curious to see how her Lisbeth plays in the film.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo will bring the holiday cheer on December 21st, and if it performs up to par, it'll spawn sequels in the form of The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.
