Mike Meyers Signs On For 'Austin Powers 4'

Just as the character's signature catchphrases had inevitably disappeared from the popular vernacular, with almost a decade since his last appearance, Austin Powers will return.  According to Drew McWeeny at Hitfix, Mike Meyers has officially signed on to bring back his most famous creation in a third sequel to Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.

The report states that Meyers has officially closed his deal, so we'll presumably be seeing not just the swinging secret agent back in action, but also his nemesis Dr. Evil and the corpulent Scotsman Fat Bastard.  Meyers wrote each previous installment, so presumably he'll be once again writing or co-writing the screenplay.

Jay Roach directed all three Austin Powers films, but its unknown whether he'll be coming back to the franchise along with Meyers.  The director is currently finishing up work on the HBO political drama Game Change and will next helm Southern Rivals, a comedy starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis as political adversaries.

The first Austin Powers film, introducing the 1960's British secret agent cryogenically frozen for thirty years, was a modest theatrical success in 1997, but its popularity exploded on home video, and subsequent releases Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Austin Powers in Goldmember were massive hits.  At the conclusion of the last film in 2002, Powers and Dr. Evil were revealed to be siblings, with Evil's son Scott, played by Seth Green, taking up his father's evil mantle.

Meyers himself has not starred in a live-action feature since 2008's The Love Guru, which was almost universally panned.  Since then, he has continued to voice the title character in DreamWorks' Shrek films, and he made a cameo appearance under prosthetic makeup in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds.
