So apparently, the sinister company that imprisoned Selene for all those years also considerately held on to her signature skintight outfit and combat boots too, probably for research purposes. The film finds Selene in a future where humans know about both vampires and Lycans, and this BioCom company is intent on creating super-werewolves. Naturally, Selene must stop them, and she'll do so with the help of her daughter, Nissa.
This is Beckinsale's return to the Underworld franchise after sitting out the third film, a prequel titled Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. Beckinsale's real-life husband and the director of the first two Underworld films Len Wiseman remains on board as a producer, but Awakening is directed by the Swedish combo of Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, both of whom seem to know how to make a movie look properly blue-gelled.
While Beckinsale is clearly the center of all the action here, the sequel also stars Charles Dance, Michael Ealy, Stephen Rea, India Eisley, Theo James, and Sandrine Holt.
Underworld: Awakening 3D will hit theaters on January 20, 2012.
