Gemma Arteton in 'Tamara Drewe'

The teaser for Tamara Drewe almost seems crafted by some kind of machine which generates stock trailers with obvious voice- overs. All that's missing from it is the "record scratch", although it does have that always-reliable moment when someone says or does something "funny" and then we cut to someone in an unrelated scene laughing (after the music pauses, of course). The movie itself may be cute and romantic, but it sure is off to a bad start with a trailer as uninspired as this. Then again, maybe I'm just the wrong audience for it...

In any event, Tamara Drew is based on a comic strip serialized in The Guardian from 2005-2007, and comes from veteran director Stephen Frears (The Queen, High Fidelity). It has the virtue of featuring two burgeoning British stars: Gemma Arteton (who has mostly been featured in flashy junk food like Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia but will have her real coming-out with The Disappearance of Alice Creed next month) and Dominic Cooper, who made the ladies swoon in Mamma Mia! Perhaps they'll elevate what seems to be a rather run-of-the-mill story concerning a materialistic newspaper columnist who returns home to her humble village and, you know, learns valuable lessons and such.

Tamara Drewe opens in the US on October 8th. Meanwhile, hopefully someone will destroy that blasted trailer machine!
