Mary-Louise Parker In Talks to Join Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges in 'R.I.P.D.'

The cast for R.I.P.D. continues coming together.  Ryan Reynolds are both attached to star in the supernatural action comedy, with Kevin Bacon tentatively set to play the villain.  Now, none other than Mary-Louise Parker, who plays an unlikely pot dealer on the Showtime series Weeds is in negotiations for a supporting role in the film, which is an adaptation of the Dark Horse comic series created by Peter Lenkov.

Reynolds plays Nick, a murdered cop who is drafted into the Rest in Peace Department, which polices the afterlife.  Along with his partner, a gunslinger who has been dead for hundreds of years played by Bridges, Nick sets out to find his killer and protect his still-living wife.  Stephanie Szocstak is currently in talks to play Nick's beloved.

Variety reports that Mary-Louise Parker is in talks to play Proctor, the character who oversees Nick's division of the R.I.P.D.  This means Parker will be the vessel for some exposition, explaining the hero's new situation after his death.  It's a role that apparently earned the interest of Jodie Foster, though obviously, she ended up passing on the project.

Like Kevin Bacon, Parker has been proven to make any film or television series better with her presence.  On the television side, she should be familiar from Weeds, The West Wing, and the HBO miniseries Angels in America, while her film credits include The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Howl, and Red Dragon.

R.I.P.D. will mark a reunion between Parker and director Robert Schwentke, with whom she worked on last year's action comedy Red.  Schwentke's directing from a screenplay by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi, with Reynolds, Neal H. Moritz, and original director David Dobkin producing.

Universal Pictures has scheduled R.I.P.D. for June 28, 2013.
