New 'Man of Steel' Set Photos Reveal Faora, Superman's Lack of Undies

In this age of super-secretive blockbusters and ever-more interconnected fervent fans, set photos are a primary means of getting a look at spoilers for currently-filming blockbusters.  It's not just spoilers, though.  Sometimes set photos reveal odd little info-nuggets that otherwise would go unknown for the time being.  The first official image of Henry Cavill in costume as Superman in Man of Steel kept him hunched over in darkness, making it impossible to tell if the new look Supes would wear his red underwear on the outside.  Today, a pair of set photos give good looks at the costume in daylight, revealing that director Zack Snyder has indeed done away with the external underwear.  That's not all, as we get another look at a guy in a mo-cap suit and see some of the outfit worn by Antje Traue as Kryptonian villainess Faora.

Both pictures were posted to an unofficial Superman facebook fan page.  They were taken in Plano, Illinois, which is doubling as Clark Kent's fictitious hometown of Smallville, Kansas, as you can tell by the newspaper truck behind Superman for the "Smallville Sentinel."

There's very little detail, but does it look to anyone else like there's some sort of reflective patterning around the costume's waist and wrists?

If you're wondering why Superman artist and co-creator Joe Shuster included those red undies on the costume in the first place, such an odd fashion statement was common of the circus strongmen of the time.  The image of the first superhero immediately recalled their outlandish and burly feats of strength.

The Man of Steel production will continue in Illinois for awhile, including a stint in Chicago, before moving on to Canada and then to Southern California's Edwards Air Force Base.  Michael Shannon and Antje Traue are playing the Kryptonian baddies, while Amy Adams is the new Lois Lane.  Russell Crowe and Julia Ormond are Superman's biological parents, with Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as the Kents.  Laurence Fishburne is Daily Planet editor Perry White, and Harry Lennix and Christopher Meloni are military-types.

Man of Steel is almost two years off, with a release date of June 14, 2013.
