Screaming Cap! Hulk Smash! New 'The Avengers' Promo Art

Just a few days ago, a piece of tie-in comic book comic art showed the superhero ensemble of The Avengers hanging out on the SHIELD helicarrier.  Simply as proof that the ambitious Marvel Studios team-up is actually, really happening, the image was thrilling, though the titular team was not exactly striking a particularly dynamic pose.  Now, a brand new promotional image removes Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and moves the superheroes from the confines of SHIELD to the streets, where Thor is doing quite a bit of damage to a city street.  You have to imagine that municipal workers the world over get a little anxious when they see the Avengers on the way, given the amount of collateral damage the super team no doubt causes.

In the image, which debuted at (via Collider), Captain America is embodying the American response to Netflix's new payment structure and the team seems to be facing the wrong direction, what the massive explosion directly behind them.  While Scarlett Johansson's  character, Black Widow, is commonly believed to have no superpowers, this image reveals that she does, in fact, possess the power of a truly ridonkulous backside.

Right now, The Avengers is finishing up principal photography with two days on location in New York under the watchful eye of writer-director Joss Whedon.  For those keeping track, the inevitable blockbuster is the Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dollhouse, and Firefly creator's second feature directorial gig after Serenity back in 2005.  Still, he's got lots of TV directing experience and about as much geek credibility as any man alive.  In Joss we trust.

Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, and Samuel L. Jackson will get their hero on when The Avengers hits theaters on May 4, 2012.
