Spoiler-Filled 'The Double' Trailer Gives Away the Game

The very first trailer for the action thriller The Double takes two minutes and twenty-five seconds to provide what feels like a beat-for-beat breakdown of the film's plot, so you might want to avoid it if you're at all sensitive to spoilers.  The film stars Richard Gere and Topher Grace as federal agents attempting to track down a presumed dead Soviet assassin who is apparently at work and killing again.

We've reached a weird point of crazy-sensitivity regarding spoilers as a whole, where a revelation from a fifteen-year old movie or long-defunct television series can arose unbridled rage and ceaseless indignation.  While there's now some solid scientific proof that spoilers don't kill a viewer's enjoyment of a story, there's one thing that still justifiably gets a lot of gooses, and that's when a film's trailer seems to not simply reveal some big twists, but also just runs through the entire plot.

But I digress.  This trailer for The Double is indeed one of those trailers that doesn't have the confidence to hold back some secrets, and you can watch it in high definition over at Apple.

Then again, without that big turn in the story, perhaps many folks would be far less inclined to watch a movie that they'll end up enjoying, spoilers or not.

Richard Gere has a distinguished Silver Fox competition in the film with Martin Sheen, while True Blood's Stephen Moyer gets menacing in a wife-beating and Odette Yustman plays the ladyfriend of Topher Grace's character.  Stana Katic and Chris Marquette also play substantial roles in The Double.

The film is the directorial debut of Michael Brandt, who penned the screenplay with his regular writing partner Derek Hass.  The duo has written scripts for the likes of 3:10 to Yuma, Wanted, 2 Fast 2 Furious, and Catch That Kid, a 2004 kiddie-caper that actually stars a pint-sized, pre-Twilight Kirsten Stewart.

But I've digressed yet again.  The Double is set to roll out nationwide on September 23rd.
