After playing Raoul Duke in Terry Gilliam's batshit-crazy Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas back in 1998, The Rum Diary once again finds Depp playing a cinematic surrogate for his late literary idol and longtime friend, Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. Based on the first novel that Thompson ever wrote (but not the first published), the film follows Paul Kemp, a freelance reporter working in Puerto Rico, where the booze-loving journalist can't help but muckrake, party, and get mixed up with dizzy dames.
Here's the poster, with an appreciative tip of the hat to Yahoo! Movies, where it made its welcome debut.

The first trailer for the film made its way online less than two weeks ago, and you can partake in even more mini-bottle action with that preview by clicking right here.
Depp's been trying to get The Rum Diary made for quite some time now, and it looks like it could be a blast. To direct, Depp recruited Withnail and I writer-director Bruce Robinson, who has been out of the directorial game since 1992 but has a unique style. The cast includes Richard Jenkins, Amber Heard, Giovanni Ribisi, and Michael Rispoli.
The Rum Diary won't take any guff from swine in theaters starting October 28th.
