The story, based on a novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings, finds Fox grappling with some unpleasant revelations and, more crucially, his relationship with his daughters following a boating accident that removes his wife (Judy Greer) from the familial equation. Payne adapted the screenplay, along with familiar comedic actors Jim Rash and Nat Faxon.
Here for your enjoyment thanks to The Playlist, is the second clip from The Descendants:
The Descendants is one of two high profile George Clooney movies hitting theaters this Fall, along with The Ides of March, which he also directs. That one is a political drama adapted from the play Farragut North, with Clooney playing a presidential nominee and Ryan Gosling as a press secretary who becomes disillusioned in the course of the campaign. To see a clip from that film that rrived online last week, click here. Both films are playing at the Toronto International Film Festival. The Descendants premiered at Telluride, where reviews were just as strong as you'd expect from a new Alexander Payne joint.
The film's cast is an odd, interesting assembly that includes Robert Forster, Matthew Lillard, Beau Bridges, Mary Birdsong, and the always funny Rob Huebel.
The Descendants gets a nationwide release starting on November 23rd, and I for one can't wait.
*Payne's last full feature as director was Sideways in 2004. Between then and now, though, he directed the pilot for the HBO series Hung, and produced that series, as well as Cedar Rapids and a Japanese remake of Sideways.
