Now for a bit of background. Since there's a healthy library of interconnected Sin City comics and the reception of the film was critically enthusiastic and commercially successful, talk of a sequel commenced almost immediately. In no time at all, both Rodriguez and Miller were publicly stating that the next installment was very much in the works, and in short order Rodriguez was promising that it would shoot in the very near future.
Six years later, and Sin City 2 obviously has yet to happen. Every few months, someone involved with the first film will provide an update, usually a hopeful one, then the project will again go quiet. During his Hall H panel at this year's San Diego Comic-Con in July, Rodriguez said that financing for the sequel is completely in place and that production could very well begin soon. He imposed an implicit ultimatum on the film, saying, "If it's going to happen, it's going to happen this year."
Just last week, news broke that William Monahan, who won an Academy Award for his The Departed screenplay, has been brought aboard to rewrite the Sin City 2 screenplay, working from drafts by Miller. Jaime King mentioned the involvement of Monahan when Philbrick asked her about the sequel on the red carpet at last night's event.
"I hear so many things, between the cast and Robert, and Frank, because Frank's like my brother," she said. "They hired a new writer, an Oscar-winning writer, to work on the draft." Though she didn't mention him by name, Monahan's hiring became public last Monday. For clarification, King also confirmed that she will have a role in the sequel, saying, "That's what I've been told, yes."
Since the early days of Sin City 2's development, it's been said by the filmmakers that the film would incorporate the story A Dame to Kill For, which acts a sort of prequel for Clive Owen's character, Dwight, and also introduces a very prominent new role for the titular woman worth murdering for. At Comic-Con, Rodriguez explained that a new story written by Miller and titled The Long Bad Night would also be a part of the sequel.
King mentioned the mix of existing and new material, but also made sure to express that even with Monahan contributing a new draft of the screenplay, it all starts and ends with Miller. "I don't know for sure, now, because they're having a new writer come on," she said of Sin City 2's stories. "But my understanding, it was kind of a melange of the original work of what Frank has done, but everything always comes from Frank, you know what I mean? So even if someone else is writing the physical script, it will always be Frank Miller's ideas."
For six years, fans have expressed an inextinguishable hope that oh-so soon, the new film will be in production, egged on by the enthusiasm and positivity of its directors. According to King, the experience of many of the actors involved has mirrored the anticipation of fans, as she explained, "You know, one minute, Robert would be like, 'Okay, we're shooting in two months.' And I'm like, 'Okay, I'll be ready.' And then it goes for two years and two years and two years."
The first film exactingly recreated images from the comics by shooting actors in minimal sets on green screen stages, then digitally building Miller's minimalistic settings. At the time, no film had so successfully created a world in this way, though some had tried. With so much time having passed and the techniques becoming fairly common, King believes that leaves the sequel with a new challenge. "It's interesting, now, to see how it's going to play," she said. "I feel like what we did then was so revolutionary, so we're really going to have to really step it up."
Sin City isn't the only geek-friendly property with whom Jaime King is closely associated. She has provided the voice of Jedi-turned-bounty hunter Aurra Sing on several episodes of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Her work on the franchise to end all franchises goes beyond that, though, and extends to the impending release of Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray.
"I just did this thing for Star Wars," King enthused. "It was myself and Seth Rogen and Emma Stone for George Lucas where they had us do scenes from Star Wars and they put it in the actual Star Wars scenes to help promote the Blu-ray that's coming out." Of the experience, she said, "I only wanted to play boys. I'm like, 'I want to play Obi-Wan, I want to play Yoda, I want to play Luke, I want to play Uncle Owen.' I played Darth Sidious. That was awesome."
So we'll soon see Jaime King playing many Y-chromosomal Star Wars characters, presumably in a bonus feature on the Blu-ray. Whether or not we'll see her once again playing Wendy in Sin City 2, only time will tell.
Star Wars: The Complete Saga will be released on Blu-ray September 16th.
X-Men: First Class is available on Blu-ray and DVD starting today.
