IAR EXCLUSIVE: Tom Arnold Talks 'The Expendables 2' rumors and 'True Lies 2''

There have been a lot of rumors lately about The Expendables 2, a sequel to Sylvester Stallone’s 2010 testosterone-filled, action-packed extravaganza. Some of them have turned out to be true, and others have been false. The original film earned over $250 million worldwide at the box office and featured a long list of ‘80s and ‘90s action stars including Stallone, Jason Statham (The Transporter), Jet Li (Romeo Must Die), Dolph Lundgren (Rocky IV), Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler), Bruce Willis (Die Hard), and Arnold Schwarzenegger (Terminator 2: Judgment Day).

While Stallone co-wrote and directed the first film, it has been previously announced that Simon West (Con-Air) would be taking over directing duties from “Rambo” and David Agosto and Ken Kaufman would be crafting the script. Part of the fun of the first film was seeing all of these unique action stars on the big screen at the same time, and there have been many rumors about which actors “Rocky” might ask to join him for the next installment. The impressive list of hopefuls include Jean Claude Van Damme (Timecop), Chuck Norris (The Delta Force), Scott Adkins (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Hulk Hogan (No Holds Barred), Steven Segal (Out For Justice), Tom Arnold (True Lies), Mr. T (Rocky III), Carl Weathers (Predator), Vin Diesel (xXx), Dwayne Johnson (Fast Five), Charlie Sheen (Wall Street), Christopher Lambert (Highlander), John Travolta (Pulp Fiction), Nicolas Cage (The Rock), and Christian Slater (True Romance).

While it was recently announced that Willis and Schwarzenegger would be reprising their roles (in a larger capacity), and that Chuck Norris, Jean Claude Van Damme, and Scott Adkins had been confirmed to join the cast, one actor who will not be appearing in the upcoming sequel is Tom Arnold. Last week another news site reported that the comedian/actor might be appearing in The Expendables 2, but last night I had a chance to catch up with the actor at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood and he denied the report. I had the pleasure of speaking with Tom Arnold on the red carpet at a release party for X-Men: First Class, which is available on Blu-ray and DVD today. I asked the actor point blank if he will be appearing in The Expendables 2 and here is what he had to say about the script for the film, the rumor, and how it all got started.

“Here’s what happened. I was at the premiere of a show I do called Sons of Anarchy and (a reporter) mentioned it. (Stallone) had sent me the script to read to be nice and I said (to the reporter) that I loved the script. The (reporter) said you should be in it and I said, damn right I should, then I read on the Internet that I’m in it. I’M NOT IN IT! I think there are places for me for sure but you know everyone else in the world is in it. Arnold’s in it, and (I think) I should be in it. He’s in it for four minutes and I can be in it with him. So no, but its amazing. They did a great job and there is no part for me.”

Since we were on the subject of the former Governator, I also took the opportunity to ask Tom Arnold about the decades long rumor that he and Mr. Schwarzenegger will eventually reunite for a follow-up to the 1994 hit film True Lies, directed by James Cameron. Here is what he had to say about a possible sequel, his friendship with Schwarzenegger, and making the film with or without the blessing of James Cameron.

“You know (Schwarzenegger) has been having some issues the last few months going from Governor to being a normal citizen … sort of normal. You know that will happen one day when everybody gets it together. Right now he’s doing a couple of other things and I’m busy. I’m too busy so it’s up to when we can get our schedules to work. But its fun, for seventeen years we’ve been getting together and talking about it at least once a week and one day it will happen and it will be amazing. Jim Cameron may not agree, normal people may not agree but I believe it will happen. We will be very old and it will happen.”

So there you have it! For now, Tom Arnold will not be appearing in The Expendables 2 … but that could always change. Would you want to see the funnyman join the cast of ultra macho-men? And do you think True Lies 2 will ever get made? Do you think James Cameron will be involved? For the answer to these questions and more … only time will tell. Check back with IAR in the weeks and months to come for more information on these projects as details become available.

X-Men: First Class is available now on Blu-ray and DVD.

The Expendables 2 is currently in development.
