'Thor 2' Moves From Summer to Thanksgiving 2013

Over this last summer, Marvel Studios had its second two-movie summer following the one-two punch of Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk back in 2008.  The first of 2011's Marvel movies, Thor, managed to introduce the Asgardian setting and cosmic elements to the cinematic universe without fuss, which should allow the titular Thunder God played by Chris Hemsworth to integrate nicely into Joss Whedon's The Avengers

For 2013, Marvel was planning another double-decker summer, with Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 both sating our need for seasonal superheroics, but now, it seems Disney and Marvel have pushed Thor 2 back about three and a half months to Thanksgiving.

Included in this morning's big release date news regarding the Johnny Depp-Gore Verbinski blockbuster The Lone Ranger getting a new date, The Hollywood Reporter also dropped a new November 16, 2013 release for Thor 2.  The sequel was previously scheduled for July 26th, 2013, but Disney has slid Phineas and Ferb into that date.

Iron Man 3, directed by Shane Black, remains set as the first post-The Avengers Marvel movie, hitting theaters on May 3, 2013.

Thor 2's new date is the first time a comic book movie from Marvel has not arrived in the summer months, but is still in keeping with the general plan to release two new films every year.

Since Thor 2 does not yet officially have a director, the extra time is good news for the film.  Thor director Kenneth Branagh has opted not to return.  Frequent Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire helmer Brian Kirk was initially said to be negotiations to direct, but in September, Monster director Patty Jenkins became the frontrunner. If she does end up in the director's chair, it'll be her first effects-driven blockbuster.

Don Payne, one of five credited contributors to the first Thor script, is currently working on the sequel screenplay.  Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige has said that the next installment will find Chris Hemsworth's Thor continuing to explore the nine realms, while also continuing his relationships with his father, Odin, and lovely Earthling Jane Foster.  Presumably, this means Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman will be back for another round, in addition to Tom Hiddleston, who also plays Loki in The Avengers.

So, Thor 2 arrives on November 15, 2013.
