In news that's sure to either elate or infuriate science-fiction fans, it's been revealed that "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindelof has been tapped to re-write the Alien prequel for 20th Century Fox and Ridley Scott, who will produce and possibly direct. This marks Lindelof's first big solo writing gig, after collaborating with his "Lost" writing staff for six years, as well as with writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci on the upcoming Star Trek 2 and Cowboys and Aliens.

To be sure, Lindelof divided many of the ABC show's fans greatly with the controversial series finale that he and partner Carlton Cuse cooked up - although he had certainly helped divide fans already with the show that always seemed to give more questions than answers. There was never any question that the duo had ideas in spades, it was the follow-through that always ended in frustration.

In an odd twist, Deadline.com reports that during Lindelof and Scott's meeting, the two hit it off so well that they hatched an idea for another film, unrelated to Alien. No telling what that may be as of right now.

As for Scott, he's been developing the project for years, mostly based off an original screenplay by Jon Spaihts (the upcoming Passengers), although he's still not a sure thing to direct. The idea is to release it in 3D (of course), although whether or not it will be shot that way is another story. Now he's got to decide if it's really the next picture he'll direct - a few weeks ago, he attached himself to The Wolf of Wall Street, which has Leonardo DiCaprio on board as producer and star.
