Behind the Scenes of Stuntwork on 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol'

The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building on Earth, a $1.5 billion dollar tower that stands 165 stories and 2,723 feet above the city of Dubai.  It was only a matter of time before Tom Cruise went crawling and swinging around on its exterior in a Mission: Impossible movie.  A new behind-the-scenes featurette on Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol shows Cruise doing just that, under the director of animation-master-turned-live-action-action-director Brad Bird.  It's thoroughly ridiculous – and I mean that in the most impressive way possible – to see how casually Cruise dangling and jumping in a scenario that looks pretty thoroughly terrifying to any sensible person.

Since the first film in 1996, the Mission: Impossible franchise has always included a sequence in which Cruise does some vertiginous action shenanigans on wires, and after a big swing between two Shanghai skyscrapers in Mission: Impossible III, the fourth film naturally had to go even bigger.

Just yesterday, Paramount released a new one-sheet for the film, which you can see by clicking right here.

JJ Abrams, who made his feature directorial debut with Mission: Impossible III in 2006 (Interestingly, both David Fincher and Joe Carnahan were involved at various points) is producing this new installment through his Bad Robot production company.  Alias veterans Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec wrote the screenplay, with polishing from Christopher McQuarrie, who is currently directing Cruise in the action adaptation One Shot.

Cruise is once again doing all manner of globe-trotting espionage as Ethan Hunt, while the film's second lead is played by Jeremy Renner, who just might become the new face of the franchise in future installments.  Simon Pegg is back as tech-guru Benji Dunn, with Ving Rhames making another appearance as Luther Stickwell.  Paula Patton, Josh Holloway, Tom Wilkinson, Michael Nyqvist, Lea Seydoux, and Anil Kapoor round out the cast.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol premieres in IMAX on December 16th, and makes its way to regular-sized screens on December 21st.
