Variety broke the story on Baldwin's involvement in the film, which is set in a seemingly utopian society that terminates every inhabitant as soon as they turn 30 years old. Gosling would play a sort of executioner who naturally goes on the run when his thirtieth birthday rolls around.
Baldwin has yet to see one of his screenplays produced, but his screenplays have earned him a lot of attention, starting with The West is Dead, a Black List selection. He subsequently penned Red Asphalt for director Timur Bekmambetov and The Outsider for Warner Bros, but neither has yet come to fruition.
Baldwin become the third writer to work on Logan's Run in the last year. Before Winding Refn and Gosling came aboard, novelist-turned 28 Days Later Sunshine screenwriter Alex Garland was at work on the film and for producers Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman. In April, former Los Angeles cop Will Beall began his contribution to the script. Beall wrote the currently-filming Gangster Squad, which also stars Gosling, and the studio is hot on him as a writer, so he may very well be busy.
Logan's Run has seen a number of creative teams come and go, with several different big-time directors making attempts at actually getting the film made. X-Men and The Usual Suspects director Bryan Singer and screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie were long attached, while V For Vendetta's Jame McTeigue also spent some time on the project. Prior to Winding Refn, Carl Erik Rinsch was involved, but he opted instead to make his theatrical debut 47 Ronin at Universal.
