New Trailer for Steven Soderbergh's 'Haywire' Kicks Ass In the Best Way

A new trailer for Haywire, the first all-out action movie from director Steven Soderbergh, has arrived online today, and to say that it's a doozy would be a rather dramatic understatement.  As it opens, the trailer pulls a clever trick, visually introducing the film's leading lady, MMA star Gina Carano, in fancy evening wear with Michael Fassbender, giving the distinct impression of a restrained relationship drama.  Then, out of nowhere, the two start viciously beating the hell out of each other, and the trailer hops into high-action mode without ever looking back.  Like the first trailer released over the summer, this one ably sells Carano as a true action star, and her character, Mallory Kane, looks to be an unstoppable whirlwind, a one-woman wrecking machine jarring loose our notions of what an asskicker looks like.

The trailer debuted today at Entertainment Weekly, and is, for the time being, exclusive to their site, so click on the image below to navigate over to EW.

Here's the official synopsis:

Mallory Kane is a highly trained operative who works for a government security contractor in the dirtiest, most dangerous corners of the world. After successfully freeing a Chinese journalist held hostage, she is double crossed and left for dead by someone close to her in her own agency.

Suddenly the target of skilled assassins who know her every move, Mallory must find the truth in order to stay alive.Using her black-ops military training, she devises an ingenious—and dangerous—trap. But when things go haywire, Mallory realizes she’ll be killed in the blink of an eye unless she finds a way to turn the tables on her ruthless adversary.

Apparently, the director of Contagion, Ocean's Eleven, Traffic, and Erin Brockovich stumbled upon an Mixed Martial Arts matchup on television one night and was immediately inspired to build a feature film around Gina Carano.  To craft the story, he called upon his screenwriter Lem Dobbs, with whom he famously collaborated on The Limey.  Carano's making her feature debut with Haywire, but she's surrounded by veteran actors including Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton, Michael Angarano, and Michael Fassbender.  We're taking bets on how many of those actors are brutally beaten in the course of the movie.

Haywire is set for theatrical release on January 20, 2012.

Full Disclosure: Haywire is produced by Relativity Media, iamROGUE'S parent company.
