Sacha Baron Cohen is the Latest Addition to Quentin Tarantino's 'Django Unchained'

Part of the fun of any Quentin Tarantino joint is seeing just who the director will cast to populate whatever strange, foul-mouthed world he's building on film.  He's currently knee-deep in preproduction on his next film, a Spaghetti Western set in the pre-Civil War American South, and so far, the casting on Django Unchained has not disappointed one bit, living up to both Tarantino's unique standards and his ambitious material.  With all the major roles filled, Tarantino is now assigning actors to smaller but still important parts, and the latest addition is Sacha Baron Cohen, the British comedy giant responsible for Ali G, Borat, and Bruno.

According to Variety, Baron Cohen is in final negotiations to join the film, which tells the story of a liberated slave who goes on a quest to find his still-enslaved wife, Broomhilda, and free her from her oppressors.  Sacha Baron Cohen will play Scotty, a gambler who ends up buying Broomhilda for less-than-scrupulous reasons.

Apparently Baron Cohen's screen time won't be too substantial, but Tarantino was very particular about who would play the part because of its crucial importance to the overall story.

Since Borat made him a comedy star in America, Baron Cohen has starred in Bruno and shown up in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.  He'll next be seen in Martin Scorsese's Hugo, due November 23rd, and will star in next year's The Dictator.

Jamie Foxx will star in Django Unchained as Django, with Kerry Washington as Broomhilda.  Leonardo DiCaprio will play the primary villain, a sadistic plantation owner by the name of Calvin Candie.  Christoph Waltz, who broke out with Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, is on board as a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter who teaches Django many a mercenary skill, while Samuel L. Jackson will play Candie's loyal personal valet.  Also appearing in the film will be Kurt Russell, Don Johnson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Savini, Anthony LaPaglia, RZA, and M.C. Gainey.

Production on the film is set to begin in January of 2012 for a December 25, 2012 release date.
