'The Great Gatsby' Set Photos: DiCaprio, Mulligan, and Maguire Looking Sharp

Hear ye, hear ye, a new batch of photos from the Sydney, Australia set of The Great Gatsby are now online, and they ably demonstrate what The Aviator, Titanic, J. Edgar, and Gangs of New York made abundantly clear: Leonardo DiCaprio is very good at wearing period costumes.  Last month we saw some set photos of Tobey Maguire in costume as narrator and sidekick Nick Carraway, but these new images give our first look at DiCaprio as title character Jay Gatsby, as well as Carey Mulligan as the object of his inadvisable affections, Daisy Buchanan.  All three actors portraying the central figures in the story (though to be fair, Nick doesn't really do too much) look just as sharp as you'd expect in their costumes designed by the reliably great Catherine Martin, with DiCaprio seeming to capture the stylish arrogance of a showboating Gatsby.

All of these images are here for your viewing pleasure and scrutiny thanks to Just Jared, so head over there if you're inclined to see more.

Catherine Martin has served as both the costume and production designer on all of director Baz Luhrmann's films,  starting with Strictly Ballrooom and continuing through Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge, and Australia.  There's no doubt her designs for The Great Gatsby will be all kinds of handsome, particularly Gatsby's lavish estate and the wild, expensive parties he's so fond of throwing.

F. Scott Fitzgerald's most famous and enduring novel has been adapted many times before, most notably with Robert Redford playing Gatsby, but this is the first time it will be shot and presented in 3D.  It's a somewhat odd choice for the material, and I can't help but worry that, coupled with Luhrmann's bombastic style, it could overwhelm the simple grace of Fitzergerald's writing.

With Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire in the central roles, that leaves Joel Edgerton as Daisy's reprehensible husband Tom, Isla Fisher as his mistress Myrtle Wilson, and Jason Clarke as her husband George Wilson, a cipher for most of the story who nonetheless becomes crucially important.

The Great Gatsby is set for release on December 25, 2012.
