There's a whole lot to like about the new teaser trailer for Miramax's Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, a remake of the 1972 TV movie of the same name: The creepy voice-over, the sudden jolts, the palpable atmosphere of dread... Horror fans, or just fans of getting a good scare, would be wise to toss this one up high on their must-see list, I'm sure of that much. The name Guillermo del Toro appearing halfway through the trailer doesn't hurt, either. (It's also nice to see that it's rated R for "terror".)

The film was directed by artist Troy Nixey, who is making his feature debut here. Nixey grabbed a lot of attention with his clever short, Latchkey's Lament, and if you give it a look, you'll see why he's such a promising new director.

If you don't know what this is about, here's the quick and easy synopsis: A young girl discovers a hoard of monsters living underneath her father and stepmother's house. Done. Sometimes, simpler is better, and this is just a stripped-down story about creatures under your bed that are out to get you.

Starring Guy Pearce, Katie Holmes, Bailee Madison and a batch of evil little minions, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark comes out on January 21, 2011.
