American Society of Cinematographers Announce Best Cinematography Nominees

Some folks get excited about football season, others about baseball season, and still others get their jollies altogether more improbably from awards season.  While the former are actual competitions intentionally meant to culminate in an ultimate victor, the awards season, which ends with all the pomp, circumstance, and orgiastic "Who are you wearing?" spectacle of the Academy Awards, turns movies into a competition.  After the initial volley of critical awards late last year, we're now in the phase of specific professional organizations announcing their nominations.

Over the last week, we've been treated to the official nomination lists from the Art Directors Guild, Producers Guild, Writers Guild, and the Directors Guild.  Today, the American Society of Cinematographers are getting in on the nomination action, and we know now the five cinematographers in the running for the Outstanding Cinematography Award for films made in 2011.

The official nominees are as follows:

Tree of Life – Emmanuel Lubezki

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo  Jeff Cronenweth

Hugo  Robert Richardson

Tinker, Sailor, Soldier, SpyHoyte van Hotema

The ArtistGuillaume Schiffman

While it was fairly surprising to see The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo up for a Writers Guild Award, the film is gorgeous, as is typical of Cronenweth's work, and is deserving of all the technical accolades it can get.  The Artist is very much a favorite in awards season, popping up on damn near every list of nominees, and Hugo has been making many an appearance as well.

Notable work that didn't make the ASC cut are Newton Thomas Sigel for Drive, Wally Pfister for Moneyball, and Janusz Kaminski for War Horse.  That last film seemed destined to be a favorite throughout awards time, but it's largely getting shut out.  Chalk that up to earnest, old fashioned storytelling and a general expectation of greatness from Steven Spielberg.

The ACS Award winner will be announced in just about a month, on February 12th.
