Film Independent Hosting Oscar Nominees Aplenty at LACMA This February

With its famous traffic, ubiquitous smog, and abhorrent city planning, Los Angeles tends be a bit of a punching bag for the rest of the country, from the Midwest to New York City.  While one could argue the cultural and aesthetic value of the city all day, it is without a doubt the premiere city in America for moviegoing.  There are, of course upscale theaters like the Arclight or the Landmark, and there are unparalleled revival houses such as the New Beverly, the Aero, and the the Silent Movie Theater.

In addition to this embarrassment of riches, there's the cinematic programming at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on Wilshire Boulevard.  Film Independent, the very same non-profit organization that puts on the annual Independent Spirit Awards celebrating the best in independent film, has a year-round weekly film series curated by critical luminary and KCRW's The Treatment host Elvis Mitchell.

Here in early February, the Film Independent series is hosting no less than two of this year's Best Actor Academy Award nominees and one Best Supporting Actor nominee.  On Friday, February 3rd, LACMA will be the place for an evening with Tinker ,Tailor, Soldier, Spy lead Gary Oldman, during which the actor will appear for a live discussion between screenings of State of Grace and The Contender.

Then on Monday, February 6th, it's a Moneyball kind of night.  Before the film actually plays, Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, and Billy Beane, the real life Oakland A's General Manager who Pitt portrays in the film, will all participate in a live conversation regarding the Best Picture nominee.

Not only that, but Thursday, February 2nd will also see a Lars von Trier spotlight showing both Zentropa and Medea

On Friday, February 10th, the celebration of Paramount Pictures' 100th Anniversary continues with two films starring Richard Pryor and directed by Sidney J. Furie: Lady Sings the Blues and Hit!

Then, on Thursday, February 16th, there's the latest installment of Jason Reitman's Live Read.  If you haven't heard of Live Read, it's a spectacular little event in which Reitman, the director of Juno, Up in the Air, and Young Adult assembles a cast of recognizable actors to stage familiar scenes from classic films in front of an audience.  The line-up for this particular Live Read has yet to be revealed, but you can rest assured that it'll be good.

For full details on the Film Independent screenings, head to the official schedule, where you can find information on ticketing, admission, and membership.  That said, we'll see you there.
