Amell has been all over television in the last few years. He was very nearly selected to replace Andy Whitfield on the Starz Spartacus series, but he has had multi-episode roles on series such as 90210, The Vampire Diaries, Heartland, Private Practice, and Hung.
Now, according to Deadline, he'll take up the mantle of the Green Arrow. He's the second actor to do so on The CW, following Justin Hartley, who played the character over 72 episodes on Smallville.
This new series will have no relationship to its predecessor though. Last week, a casting breakdown revealed that Arrow will maintain the shipwreck origin story for Queen, a billionaire who, upon returning to his native city, takes to using specialized arrows and his formidable skills to protect the city. The new Deadline report indicates that Queen will become a politician on the would-be series as well, which will allow the character to properly express the far-left political ideology he espouses in comic book form.
Arrow is being developed by Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim, both of whom contributed to the screenplay to last summer's DC superhero adventure Green Lantern, as well as producing Brothers & Sisters and Eli Stone. Also developing the series is Andrew Kreisberg, a a co-executive producer on Fringe and The Vampire Diaries.
Several DC-based properties have been in development as of late, even after last year's Wonder Woman debacle at NBC. These include Deadman and The Spectre, both of which are being beaten to pilot by Arrow. As Wonder Woman so efficiently illustrated, though, a pilot order doesn't necessarily guarantee that Arrow will go to series.
