Quoting Jay-Z in the 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' Super Bowl Spot

If yesterday was the day of the commercials for commercials – with both John Carter and The Avengers dropping tiny ten-second teases of their respective Super Bowl commercials – then today is the day of straight-up Super Bowl commercials.  Earlier, The Dictator debuted its full Super Bowl spot, and now Paramount has taken the liberty of unveiling its thirty-second commercial for G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the sequel to 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra that will attempt to cleanse the taste of that movie from the audience's collective palette.

Like the teaser trailer released in December, this quick spot is unabashedly goofy and in being so, achieves a kind of ludicrous cool.  It kicks off with Dwayne Johnson quoting an unexpected source in his wonderfully emphatic way, then proceeds to run through Cobra banners on the White House, a motorcycle that turns into a missile mid-jump, Adrianne Palicki looking gorgeous, and Bruce Willis being very Bruce Willis as the original General Joe.

Head over to Apple to see the spot in high definition glory or just give it a watch below.

Based on Johnson's Roadblock character quoting Jay-Z, it's looking like a safe bet that Zombieland writing duo Rhett Rheese and Paul Wernick have a properly tongue in cheek sensibility that could deliver a nimble, self-consciously fun summer diversion.  Jon M. Chu, the director of Step Up 2: The Streets and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never certainly seems to be falling right into the blockbuster groove.

Though it might look like it, this isn't a reboot, but will definitely retool the franchise.  Channing Tatum returns as Duke, for example, but don't expect him to stick around for too long.  Ray Park and Byung-hun Lee are also back as Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, along with Arnold Vosloo as Cobra's disguise-guy, but the rest of cast is all new, from D.J. Cortona to Adrianne Palicki, Elodie Yung, Joseph Mazzello, RZA, Walton Goggins, and Ray Stevenson.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation hits theaters on June 29th.
