'The Evil Dead' Remake Casts Jane Levy and Shiloh Fernandez

Look, the Evil Dead remake is happening.  You're never going to get that sequel that opens with Ash stomping undead ass on the lunar surface or generally being an unstoppable force of coolness.  Let's accept that, move on, pop in our battered VHS copies of Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness, thank whatever deity to which we pray that Sami Raimi's trilogy exists, and hope for the best from this The Evil Dead remake.  That remake won't feature Bruce Campbell as Ash, but it has just cast its two lead actors.

Deadline reports that Jane Lynch is coming aboard to play the protagonist, Mia, a recovering addict whose friends take her to a remote cabin in the woods while she detoxes.  Of course, they discover the Necronomicon and everything goes south.  Lily Collins was previously in negotiations with FilmDristrict for the role, but she bowed out last week.  It didn't take long for the filmmakers to find a replacement, though, and Levy is currently in talks to star as Mia.

Then there's the male lead.  According to Variety, Shiloh Fernandez has snagged that role, which was apparently a very coveted one.  Don't expect this character to fall into Ash's quippy, chainsaw-wielding mode, though, as Mia is said to more strongly correspond to Campbell's original character.  And anyways, the new Evil Dead will eschew the self-conscious spook-a-blast goofiness of Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness.

Lynch is most known for her role on the ABC series Suburgatory, though she also appeared on Showtime's Shameless and stars in Fun Size, the upcoming comedic feature from The O.C. creator Josh Schwartz.  Fernandez, meanwhile, appeared in last year's Red Riding Hood and has shown up on The United States of Tara, Gossip Girl, and Jericho.

The new The Evil Dead is being produced by Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert through Raimi's Ghost House Pictures.  Uruguayan director Fede Alvarez was selected to direct based largely on the strength of his short film Panic Attack!, and he worked on a screenplay with Rodo Sayagues.  That screenplay was then polished by Oscar-winner Diablo Cody, the writer behind Juno, Jennifer's Body, and Young Adult.

The remake is scheduled for April 12, 2013.
