You can access the site, appropriately titled The Republic of Wadiya, by clicking right here.
Once there, you'll notice that everything is in the made-up language of Wadiyan, but once you've changed the language setting to English, there's a wealth of genuinely funny information on the nation, its history, and its leader, "His Excellency, General Colonel Doctor Aladeen, Democratic President-For-Life, Invincible and All-Triumphant Commander, Chief Ophthalmologist, Brilliant Genius of Humanity, Excellent Swimmer Including Butterfly, and Beloved Oppressor and Ruthless Protector of the Precious and Expendable People of Wadiya."
That would be Shabazz Aladeen, the brutal tyrant played by Baron Cohen, the creator of characters Ali G, Borat, and Bruno. While the whole site is worth a read, Aladeen's biography in particular is enjoyable, mocking the outrageous pomposity and obvious bullshit of biographies for dictators like Kim Jong-il, who, it was claimed, never once excreted in his entire life. Aladeen's bio includes factoids like the information that, while being educated an exclusive Swiss institution, he "was extremely popular and by age 14 he’d had consensual sex with over 40 students and 7 teachers."
So check out the Republic of Wadiya for a laugh and hope that the film fulfills the implicit promise made by the site's sense of humor.
After finally making a huge impression Stateside with Borat and Bruno, the already popular British actor Baron Cohen took a break from his outsized characters to do some excellent work in Martin Scorsese's Hugo. For The Dictator, though, he's reunited with his Borat director Larry Charles for a straightforward narrative feature rather than another mockumentary. The story is loosely based on the novel Zabibah and the King, an allegory supposedly written by Saddam Hussein.
The supporting cast includes Anna Faris, Ben Kingsley, John C. Reilly, Jason Mantzoukas, Kevin Corrigan, J.B. Smoove, B.J. Novak, and Megan Fox.
On Wednesday, the film's full Super Bowl TV spot emerged online. You check that out by clicking here, or just enjoy the first theatrical trailer below.
