These new stills give a sense of just how different Dredd will be from Judge Dredd. The futuristic police state of Mega City One here looks small scale, dirty, and mean. How mean? These images show the adorable, endlessly likable Olivia Thirlby blasting a dude's cranium open. See for yourself in the stills below, which are courtesy of 2000 AD.

In October there were rumors that director Pete Travis had been locked out of the editorial process on Dredd, rumors promptly answered by the production, which claimed that the plan always involved an unconventional collaborative approach between Travis and producers. One of those producers is screenwriter Alex Garland, the novelist behind The Beach who also wrote 28 Days Later... and Sunshine for director Danny Boyle.
Apparently this approach to the character will stay true to his comic book roots by never showing leading man Karl Urban without his helmet on. So Urban will be working the scowl like none other. Thirlby's the female lead, but the cast also includes Lena Headey, Jason Cope, Domhnall Gleeson, and Langley Kirkwood.
Dredd arrives in 3D on September 21, so snag some Rogue 3D Eyewear before then.
