The End Looks Funny: 'Seeking a Friend for the End of the World' Trailer

Typically, an apocalyptic movie involves undead hordes, huge visual effects, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria.  The first trailer for this summer's comedy-drama Seeking a Friend at the End of the World goes an entirely different way, though.  The movie suggests that the end times will, in fact, be pretty funny, as humanity attempts to deal with its impending extinction by way of a giant asteroid.

Steve Carell brings the deadpan as the central character, a withdrawn type who takes the news of Earth's destruction in three weeks with the same sort of resignation he's lived his entire life.  He strikes up a friendship with a neighbor played by Keira Knightley and the two navigate a world filled with absurd reactions to doom.

The trailer, which is available in high definition at Yahoo! Movies, includes a surprising number of reliably funny people, practically ensuring that Seeking a Friend at the End of the World will be amply funny.  What lingers, however, is the sense that the end of days could provide a satisfying journey for the central characters.

Even if the character work didn't exactly click for you, the promise of the supporting cast is undeniable.  There's Rob Huebel, Patton Oswalt, Connie Britton, Rob Corddry, William Peterson, Derek Luke, Melanie Lynskey, T.J. Miller, and Community secret weapon Gillian Jacobs.

The film is the directorial debut of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist screenwriter Lorene Scafaria.  It's currently scheduled for this June 22nd.
