While the film was initially pegged for this August 10th, the always-reliable release date database at Box Office Mojo indicates that Warm Bodies will now arrive on February 1, 2013. It has that date to itself for the time being, with Tom Cruise-as-Jack Reacher action movie One Shot set for a week later on February 8th.
We don't yet know what exactly motivated the shift, so it could be anything, really. Since January of this year has proven that the first two months of the year needn't be a commercial wasteland, Summit could be positioning it away from the busier summer months. Or it could perhaps be looking to take advantage of the proximity to Valentine's Day. Or maybe it'll be looking to shore up its 2013 slate after The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 does its thing at the end of this year. Or maybe post-production could just use the extra time.
While a quick summary of Warm Bodies, as well as some of the stills we've seen could lead you to write it off as a Twilight with zombies knockoff, the film has a lot going for it. Principally, it has director Jonathan Levine, who demonstrated with the woefully underappreciated The Wackness and the excellent 50/50 that he is exceptionally good at creating movies that strike a balance between humor and real emotion.
It also has two very appealing leads in Teresa Palmer and Nicholas Hoult. Palmer has yet to find just the right vehicle with which to become a household name, but she's starred in The Sorcerer's Apprentice, I Am Number Four, and Take Me Home Tonight. Hoult, who long ago played the awkward little moppet in About a Boy, recently appeared in A Single Man and Clash of the Titans, and played Beast in X-Men: First Class. He's also starring in Bryan Singer's Jack the Giant Killer, which was recently delayed from this summer to March 2013.
The film, based on a novel by Isaac Marion, also stars John Malkovich, Dave Franco, Rob Corddry, Analeigh Tipton, and Cory Hardrict.
