'The Artist' Sweeps 64th Annual BAFTAs With Seven Big Wins

We're in the home stretch of awards season here, and as we coast ever closer to the Oscar ceremony at the end of this month, it looks like the official issuing of statues of accolades has settled into an almost entirely predictable pattern.  That pattern sees the silent film homage The Artist picking up the major awards, just as did at tonight at the 64th British Academy of Film and Television Arts, where Michel Hazanavicius's film picked up no fewer than seven awards, including Best Film, Director, Leading Actor, Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Original Music, and Costume Design.

This season's usual suspects showed up for wins, as well, with Octavia Spencer taking a prize for her work in The Help and Christopher Plummer continuing his unchallenged domination of the Supporting Actor category.  Hugo, which has eleven Academy Award nominations, took technical awards for sound and production design, while Gore Verbinski's Rango was honored as the best animated film.

The ceremony, hosted by British wit and national treasure Stephen Fry, also awarded Meryl Streep for her performance as former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and the acting machine herself maintained her charm and composure even after losing a high heel on the way to the stage.  Worth noting that the outstanding Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy was acknowledged as the Oustanding British Film, and John Hurt was honored for Outstanding Contribution to British Film.

Here's there full list of BAFTA winners per an official press release:
