First Image of Jaden Smith in Costume from 'After Earth'

A week ago to the day, we found out that the science fiction tale After Earth had commenced production in Costa Rica.  We found this out because director M. Night Shyamalan and star Will Smith made some pictures from the set available online.  While those images served to let us know that the film, formerly titled One Thousand AE, was shooting in the tropical location, the revealed little else about the movie.

Today, a new image offered up by Will Smith's offspring Jaden Smith reveals the young actor in the thoroughly futuristic costume he'll sport throughout After Earth, giving some insight into the look and feel of the science fiction tech that'll show up in the film.  The story follows the real life father and son as an onscreen father and son whose spacecraft crash lands on the post-apocalyptic Earth, where the elder Smith is captured, leading his son on an adventure to rescue his progenitor.

Unlike most set photos, taken from hundreds of yards away with a telephoto lens, everything we've seen from this production has been offered up by the big figures involved in the film.  This is no exception, as it came from the younger Smith's official WhoSay.

Hmmm.  The costume reminds me somewhat of the stilsuits from David Lynch's Dune, albeit not nearly as bulky or goofy-looking.

The two Smiths previously starred as father and son in The Pursuit of Happyness, which was Jaden's theatrical debut back in 2006.  He went on to star in the successful Karate Kid remake that currently has a sequel in development, demonstrating the ability of Will Smith to make even his children profitable.  The duo is joined in After Earth by supporting players Zoe Kravitz, Isabelle Fuhrman, and David Denman.

After taking on an establishing property with his most recent endeavor, The Last Airbender, this is the first film from M. Night Shyamalan that he didn't actually script himself.  Instead, he's working from a screenplay by The Book of Eli scribe Gary Whitta and Traffic writer Stephen Gaghan.

After Earth is set for release on June 7, 2013.
